Deep River Collies Puppy News!

Blog Entry on Sunday

Owner Mickie Elliott (Orlando, FL) called to say that our co-owned CH Deep River’s Consider Her Mine (Mya) whelped a litter of 5 yesterday, July 17, by CH Westwood Steele Dust. The litter contains 3 tri rough girls, a blue rough girl and a blue rough boy. Mya is pictured below at 19 months.

Also, puppies due early September at Deep River out of Jag-View Beyond a Glance (Felicia) - pointed, sired by Deep River Younghaven Alliance (Aaron) - pointed. Photos of Felicia & Aaron taken yesterday July 17 are below. Sables, sable merles, tris & blues are all possibilities from this breeding.

Felicia is from the last litter sired by CH Pinewynd’s Sparkling Brut, ROM and has a number of Deep River bred collies on her dam’s side of the pedigree. Her breeder is Shannon Pollard who kindly allowed me to own her. She has been shown sparingly so far, and has 9 points.

Aaron is the sire of a number of beautiful champions, including our much loved Top 10 smooth CH Deep River’s Bow and Arrow.

Nick Joines and Joel McCarty have recently bred our co-owned CH Deep River’s First Frost (Hannah) a blue smooth to tri rough CH Westwood Southern Yankee, a tri rough and hope for a litter of smooth and rough blues and tris in mid-Sept. Also, Nancy Parker is breeding our co-owned CH Deep River’s Mountain Shadows (Brooke) a tri rough to CH Deep River’s Ride the Lightning, a blue smooth next week; roughs and smooths, blues and tris. These puppies would be born the end of September. Puppies from these breedings will be eligible for the 6 to 9 month puppy class at the 2009 CCA national in Springfield, MA. Inquiries are welcome and may be made to me or to any of the owners of these girls. Updates will be available here.

Herding Weekend Re-Cap!

Blog Entry on Tuesday

Berryville, VA July 11, 12 & 13 Keepsake Farm AHBA herding trials… My friend Claire and I went to VA this past weekend for American Herding Breeds Association trials. There were a few baubles but overall a highly successful weekend! Claire’s sheltie, Kess, earned her HRD 3 title (Ranch Dog - Advanced). Our Joy also earned her HRD 3 title as well as her HTAD 3 (Arena Dog - Advanced) title. Joy’s scores were high enough in Level 3 to earn her 2 pts. toward her AHBA Herding Championship! Joy also earned her HTD 1 title (similar to AKC Started B Course). She also earned 3 class placements.

Mike & Tucky Vaughn’s Kate earned her HTAD 1 title. Pam Brown’s Ariel earned a Q and 4th place in HTAD 1 on Sat. Pam’s Valerie earned a JHD (Junior Herding Dog) title similar to AKC PT title. Irene Meire’s Prada earned one Q toward her JHD as did Wendy Lamp’s Powder. Alas, Peggy Moorman’s Stryker did very well on Sun., but the judge did not agree with our thoughts on this. In fact, only one JHD entry earned a JHD Q on Sun. - Valerie. Since Valerie did a near perfect run, it would have been very difficult not to pass her performance! We were puzzled by that particular judge’s approach and believe that either of the other two judges would have passed both Stryker and Powder that day also! Powder actually did a better job the day she didn’t Q than the day she did!

There are quite a few posts in this series so take your time and enjoy!

Exciting Herding News!

Blog Entry on Wednesday

This past weekend, June 28 & 29, my friend Claire Apple & I went to Scarlet Mills Farm in Birdsboro, PA to herding trials sponsored by the Australian Cattle Dog Club of America. Claire’s little bi-blue sheltie, Brick, showed the cattle dogs how cattle herding is done earning two Q’s to complete his HSAc title. Brick was High in Trial on Sunday with a 96 out of 100! I’m thrilled to say that Joy earned both her Advanced sheep title and her Advanced duck title! Thank you Claire for handling Joy to her duck title and her last sheep Q! Thank you Dee Penatzer for training and handling Joy to her first two Advanced sheep Q’s! So our girl is now CH Deep River’s Comfort and Joy RN, HXAsd. Sorry the photos aren’t better -my Kodak is not the greatest & I was afraid to get too close!

News from the Deep River Nation!

Blog Entry on Tuesday

From John & Cindy Reilly:

Rory earned her CGC, and she has been making visits to a local nursing home for a couple of months now, as part of Fairfax Pets on Wheels. Quite a girl, isn’t she?
From Joan Scaildone:Just a quick note to let you know Mr. Tanner got his Rally Novice title yesterday—I also entered him in breed—we were RWD—he did very well, moved nice and behaved.
From Kim Bailey: I didn’t remember if I told you or not-Flash did pass his herding instinct test!  I am hoping to have him ready for Aug. shows here for open.  I need to get a set of dumbbells for utility training.  Have you any idea what kind-size I need to get? He is sure a handsome boy!  Even if I do say so myself!  :D  CH Flash CD, Therapy Dog

TN Breeder’s Puppy Classic News

Blog Entry on Tuesday

TN Breeder’s Puppy Classic News
Nancy Parker & I took a trip last weekend to south central TN to visit collie friends this past weekend. The hospitality of the Pitts and the Cheatam’s was terrific, and we had a blast! I was the seminar presenter at the TN Breeder’s Puppy Classic held at Mike Cheatam’s beautiful farm in Petersburg, TN. Puppy Power was the title of my presentation on puppy evaluation and training. Thanks to all who attended! The turn out was wonderful - we saw many old friends and made some new ones. The puppy match was loads of fun (and funny) as well. I took a few photos:

Herding Update

Blog Entry on Thursday

Mixed results for our Herding weekend in Berryville, VA (May 24-26).  Joy was a good girl on Sun. at the AKC trial and got her first Advanced A duck Q with 3rd place.  On Monday at the AHBA trial on her first try on Level 3 Ranch Course she did well and got her first HRD 3 qualifying score.
Wiggy was a semi-good girl for her first tries in Intermediate A sheep at the Sat. & Sun. AKC trials.  She tried on Sat. but didn’t finish the course.  On Sun., she did finish the course but lost too many points to Q. We didn’t get to enter ducks since both her previous Q’s were under the judges officiating in Berryville.
Thanks, Claire!
